Jay Pressnell is currently an educator at Pukekohe High School in Auckland New Zealand where he is the Teacher in Charge of Design and Motion Special Effects. Jay has a huge passion for creative education and is currently leading the first Motion Special Effects Course in NZ secondary education. The course is steeped heavily in the art of storytelling and the narratives that engage students and teachers into creating work of a high standard from concept artwork to digital realisations via Virtual Reality and Motion Capture Technology. Jay has recently set up the Anamata Film Studio at the school and currently facilitates the moving image and digital folio component of the NCEA assessment. Jay has been an early creator and resource writer for NZQA with digital folios and assessment, involving the set up of teacher and student resources for moving image. Below is a range of imagery taken from the current MFX course in 2021 and the 'Last Havens' fantasy world which the students have co-created and imagined. Students have created character designs, environments, weaponry, flags, armor, digital 3D models, animated environments in virtual reality and animated their character designs in Motion capture. The course has been primarily set up to create a pathway into the film/gaming industry and provide opportunities for students to explore concept and character design as well as experiencing new technologies and future based thinking.
